Butte Cobras Junior Hockey Club formed in 2014 as an expansion team to compete in the Western States Hockey League. The Cobras play home games at the Butte Community Ice Center.
After three seasons in the WSHL the team, owned and operated by the Butte Amatuer Hockey Association, the team would join the North American 3 Hockey League after acquiring the NA3HL membership of the Glacier Nationals.
The team suspended operations before the 2017-18 season after a summer coaching change and lack of players.
Butte Cobras made their NA3HL debut in 2018-19 on September 8 falling to the visiting Helena Bighorns 8-1. Carsten Quam scored the lone tally for the Cobras.
Despite posting just five wins during the season the team saw success in advancement. Charles Blandin returned home to play professionally in France while goaltender Karl Zodda committed to play at Chatham University (NCAA Division III).
